What I did last summer
Aug. 29th, 2007 04:37 pmWent on vacations:
Mammouth Cave and Horse Cave in Kentucky. How can they know there's over 300 miles of cave if they've only explored 6? And I want to go back to Horse Cave with a video camera, and take the long tour. Horse Cave was a source of retail water in the 1880s, hydro-electric power in 1920, and a "show cave" during Prohibition. Great stories there.
Mountaineer Casino in WV. We arrived late in the evening on a weekday, and so avoided the hordes of scooter-driving seniors. Fun, but rather limited. And there were no races while we were there.
Pittsburgh, Kennywood, and Idlewild. This is how we spoil the grandson. He now has experienced a luxury hotel (the William Penn Omni, downtown Pittsburgh) and theme parks. He has become a roller-coaster enthusiast, being tall enough (at 6!) to go on everything but the big metal coasters, and loving it. We're planning another trip with him next year.
Vegas. Our first slots tournament, and we actually won something. Also, our first stay at the Imperial Palace. Very 70s. We stayed in a Luv Tub suite, which includes a tub big enough to swim in, mirrors on the ceilings, and a tiny balcony. Strange place. Oh, and a tip - the Long Island Iced Tea in the Karaoke Lounge at the IP (open nightly!) are deadly.
Sort of worked:
Finished the Lava Room promotional DVD. Started procuring equipment for the production company. Learned some stuff about Photoshop and Final Cut Studio. Did voiceovers. Slacked a bit.
Sort of worked, physically:
Built a room and helped build a set at Bloodview. This involved more work, blood, sweat, and tears and work than it sounds like. Come see it starting September 21.
Got engaged:
My ring is in the bedroom. A Sony 32" widescreen HDTV, with an engraved plaque reading "Mary's Engagement Ring." We decided on a wedding in Vegas, with our kids and bridal party and assorted SOs coming along, on October 14th, 2008. Reception for 300 of our closest friends one week later, on October 21st. John is still planning the reception, so all addresses and inquiries should go to him. I'm just handling the travel arrangements, because the Internet is my friend.
Yes, I will be wearing black. Recommendations for local seamstresses and corset makers would be greatly appreciated.
...
And this week, I'm back in school, with the "Oh God What Was I Thinking" schedule of classes TTh 4-9:50 PM. 3 classes. 6 hours. Straight. But hey, it's only two days a week. And between the three, there's only 2 midterms, and only about 80 pages of final papers. But my Com & Tech class is going to be using video games as a focus for about a third of the class. Yes, we will be playing video games in class.
And a new grad assistant job - research assistant to the prof who taught the Urban Communication seminar last spring. I'm looking forward to it. Oh, and my office this year? Shared, with no windows, but my officemates are relatively compatible, and we were left a refrigerator and two coffee makers - one sans pot - as well as floral tiles decorating the upper walls. OK, yeah. But there's a refrigerator, and the office is steps away from the Com classrooms, so we can get back to the office for a 5-minute break between classes, eat something, get more coffee - one of my fellow officemates has the same insane schedule as me, and appreciates good coffee, we're already talking about getting a coffee grinder for the office - so it's going to be interesting. Maybe fun, perhaps grueling, but definitely interesting.
